Santiago Municipality has established a new Youth Council with more than 70 young participants representing approximately 30 organizations. This development aims to foster youth participation in local governance and community initiatives, marking a significant step in youth engagement efforts.
The Youth Council was officially formed during a launch event held on March 15, 2024, at the Santiago City Hall. The participants include young leaders from educational institutions, community groups, and NGOs. The council’s primary goal is to serve as a platform for youth voices in municipal decision-making processes, policy discussions, and community projects.
According to Santiago Municipality officials, the initiative was driven by a desire to increase youth representation and create channels for young people to influence local policies. The council will operate as an advisory body, with members participating in regular meetings and community outreach activities. The mayor of Santiago, Maria Lopez, attended the launch, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement for sustainable city development.

Background of Youth Engagement Initiatives in Santiago
Prior to this development, Santiago Municipality had sporadic youth engagement programs but lacked a dedicated platform for sustained youth participation. The establishment of the Youth Council follows similar initiatives in other Latin American cities, where local governments are increasingly recognizing the importance of involving young citizens in decision-making processes. The move also responds to growing demands from youth organizations for formal channels to voice their concerns.
“Creating this Youth Council is a vital step toward making our city more inclusive and responsive to the needs of young people. We want their voices to be heard and to actively participate in shaping Santiago’s future.”
